If there's one thing I can't afford it's to keep up with the trends of every season. As much as I'd love to be investing in flower embroidered jeans and ruffle, cold shoulder jumpers at the moment, I just can't. Over the course of the season I will occasionally purchase a couple of on-trend bits, as long as I can justify the price however and know I will continue to wear them year after year. This is the main reason as to why I'd much rather invest in staple items to keep in my wardrobe.
I'm definitely an 'if it ain't black, put it back on the rack' kinda girl but of course you could switch these staples for any colour your heart desires. However, I have always thought, no matter what your preference is, everyone should have these three items in a black version. 'Why?' you ask, well quite simply black goes with everything and is flattering on absolutely everyone!
I have had this coat for years now and I genuinely believe I wear it more and more every year, which is weird but definitely proves it to be worth the investment! I picked this coat up from All Saints, my absolute favourite brand, everytime I go into a store I feel my bank account quiver in fear that I may purchase something...
The lab coat design suits my personal style and pretty much goes with everything, jeans, dresses, skirts. There's a certain masculinity to the design that I love, it also comes with a detachable tie to go around the waist and add more femininity. The Italian cloth on the outside and black silk on the inside makes it incredibly comfortable, not too heavy and not too thick. Whenever I want to smarten up a casual outfit I just pop on this coat and voilà!
The most important thing about finding the perfect black stable coat is to make sure it's in your style, whether you like denim jackets, leather jackets, parka coats, quilted coats, etc, whatever you pick, I always think it's important to invest in one that's going to stand the test of time and be there for you in your hour of need.
I have been living in these boots when it's come to going to events the past Autumn and Winter. These are the Million Sock Boots from Topshop and I am obsessed with them. If you are as short as I am, 5ft3" to be precise, then you need sock boots in your life. Because of the way they extend up your shin they really elongate your legs and, as a result, make you also look taller in photos.
Everyone needs black boots in their life and at £79 these were definitely an investment purchase! Can you imagine how gutted I was when I fell down the stairs of the underground at Oxford Circus, only to realise I had scuffed the foot of my right boot, I know right!!!- Devastating... None the less, these boots are incredible and will definitely last the test of time in their timeless style.
Lastly, the bag... This bag and I have been through thick and thin, I actually purchased it a couple of years ago before I went to New York in February 2015 as I liked how it had four different compartments and zips for two of them. This meant that any valuables where safe from being pick-pocketed and all of the quick access items, such as gloves and hats, where super easy to just whip out when I needed them.
This bag is still my day to day bag as its incredibly practical, a good size, goes with absolutely everything and still looks smart. I usually wear it using the shoulder strap as I'm really not a 'bag in hand' type of gal.. Considering the bag wasn't expensive at all it hasn't aged a day! That's what I love most about Fiorelli, they make amazing quality, beautiful bags for affordable prices. I actually own three Fiorelli handbags for different occasions but this one is definitely my favourite. I'm actually eyeing up one of Fiorelli's new designs but you will have to wait and see as to whether I decide to purchase or not!
So there you have it, three black staples I believe every woman needs throughout the year. You really can't go wrong! Because of the items I chose to feature in this post are ones that I have owned for years, to prove that these kinds of items never go out of style, the exact product isn't available anymore, but I have done my best to find ones that appear most similar to me from the same brands. Everything else excluding the coat, boots and bag however is still in stock and can be found by clicking the relevant links below:
